Course Description

If you are trying to break into the Australian mining industry from another trade — or straight out of school — this awareness course gives you the language, the rules, and the mental picture of a working open-cut mine that supervisors expect you to already know. It is written for people who have never been on site. Every term is defined in plain English, every hazard is explained before it is named, and every section is illustrated with real-world descriptions so you can picture what is being discussed. What you will cover • What surface (open-cut) mining is and how it differs from underground and quarrying. • The commodities Australia mines and where — iron ore in the Pilbara, coal in the Bowen and Hunter, gold in Kalgoorlie, bauxite in the Weipa/Gove regions, copper, nickel, lithium, mineral sands and more. • The full glossary of pit terminology — bench, berm, batter, crest, toe, high wall, low wall, ROM pad, ramp, windrow, pit floor, waste dump, tailings, ore body, overburden. • Australian & state legislation — Work Health and Safety Act & Regs, Mines Safety and Inspection Act (WA), Coal Mining Safety and Health Act (Qld), Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act (Qld), Work Health and Safety (Mines) Act (NSW), plus the SA, NT, Vic and Tas equivalents. • Mobile plant — haul trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, drills, water carts, light vehicles, service trucks — what each does and how they interact. • Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMPs), positive communications, hot seat changeovers, tag-out/isolation, dust, noise, fatigue, geotech and wall stability. • PPE, site inductions, the standard "first day" and how a shift really runs (roster patterns, pre-start, toolbox talks, take 5s, hot & cold seat). • Emergency response — ERT, muster points, ELR, and reporting of incidents/near misses under the applicable act. • How to actually get on site — Standard 11 vs company inductions, DASA/DAMP, pre-employment medical, working at heights & confined space tickets, HRWL, HR/HC/MC licences, and what recruiters are really looking for. Assessment A 55-question multiple-choice knowledge check. Passing score is 100%. Any questions you get wrong are retried — you keep going until you have demonstrated understanding of the whole topic. Important: This is a non-accredited awareness course. It does not replace the nationally recognised RIIWMG203E Standard 11 induction or any statutory ticket. It is designed to make you competent, credible and safe on your first day so you can hit the ground running.

When you complete every lesson and pass the assessment, a PDF certificate of completion is generated straight away. It shows your name, the course name, your assessment result, the date of completion, a unique serial number for audit purposes, and the signature of our director Sam Stenberg. You can download and print it any time from My learning, and anyone can confirm it is genuine using the certificate number on our verification page.

What score do I need to pass the assessment?

You need 100%. That sounds tough, but you are not sent back to the start if you get something wrong. Correct answers are locked in and you only retry the questions you missed, as many times as you need. You can also open the course slides while you are answering, so the assessment is there to make sure the information actually sticks rather than to catch you out.

Can I complete the course on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The course runs in a normal web browser on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop, and there is nothing to install. Your progress saves as you go, so you can start on your phone at smoko and finish on a computer later. A stable internet connection is recommended, especially for video lessons.

Will my employer accept this certificate?

Many Australian employers accept non-accredited awareness training as evidence that a worker has covered the underpinning knowledge, and the certificate is designed to be printed and filed for auditing. It does not replace a licence, a Statement of Attainment, or a site-specific induction or verification of competency. If the certificate is for a compliance requirement, check with your employer or site before enrolling.
