Surface Mining Awareness (Open Cut) — Australia

If you are trying to break into the Australian mining industry from another trade — or straight out of school — this awareness course gives you the language, the rules, and the mental picture of a working open-cut mine that supervisors expect you to already know. It is written for people who have never been on site. Every term is defined in plain English, every hazard is explained before it is named, and every section is illustrated with real-world descriptions so you can picture what is being discussed. What you will cover • What surface (open-cut) mining is and how it differs from underground and quarrying. • The commodities Australia mines and where — iron ore in the Pilbara, coal in the Bowen and Hunter, gold in Kalgoorlie, bauxite in the Weipa/Gove regions, copper, nickel, lithium, mineral sands and more. • The full glossary of pit terminology — bench, berm, batter, crest, toe, high wall, low wall, ROM pad, ramp, windrow, pit floor, waste dump, tailings, ore body, overburden. • Australian & state legislation — Work Health and Safety Act & Regs, Mines Safety and Inspection Act (WA), Coal Mining Safety and Health Act (Qld), Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act (Qld), Work Health and Safety (Mines) Act (NSW), plus the SA, NT, Vic and Tas equivalents. • Mobile plant — haul trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, drills, water carts, light vehicles, service trucks — what each does and how they interact. • Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMPs), positive communications, hot seat changeovers, tag-out/isolation, dust, noise, fatigue, geotech and wall stability. • PPE, site inductions, the standard "first day" and how a shift really runs (roster patterns, pre-start, toolbox talks, take 5s, hot & cold seat). • Emergency response — ERT, muster points, ELR, and reporting of incidents/near misses under the applicable act. • How to actually get on site — Standard 11 vs company inductions, DASA/DAMP, pre-employment medical, working at heights & confined space tickets, HRWL, HR/HC/MC licences, and what recruiters are really looking for. Assessment A 55-question multiple-choice knowledge check. Passing score is 100%. Any questions you get wrong are retried — you keep going until you have demonstrated understanding of the whole topic. Important: This is a non-accredited awareness course. It does not replace the nationally recognised RIIWMG203E Standard 11 induction or any statutory ticket. It is designed to make you competent, credible and safe on your first day so you can hit the ground running.
