Aligned with accredited units

This non-accredited course is mapped to the following accredited unit(s) of competency. It does not issue a Statement of Attainment, but the content prepares learners for formal assessment through an RTO.

  • Supports the underpinning knowledge used in a workplace Verification of Competency for operating and maintaining chainsaws (accredited delivery and formal assessment must be by a Registered Training Organisation or a competent workplace assessor)

Course Description

A thorough non-accredited online awareness course for Australian workers who use or work around chainsaws — councils and parks crews, rural and station workers, landscapers and arborist assistants, emergency services and SES volunteers, mine and construction site crews, property owners and contractors. Seven slide sections cover WHS duties and consultation, job planning and site hazard identification, overhead powerline clearances, exclusion zones, chainsaw personal protective equipment, chainsaw parts and safety features, fuel handling and safe starting, kickback and how to avoid it, safe cutting technique, compression and tension in timber, cross-cutting, limbing, pruning and the basics of tree felling (scarf, back cut, hinge wood and escape routes), plus daily maintenance, chain sharpening, depth gauges, shut down and securing the site. Structured around the knowledge and practical checks used in a Verification of Competency for operating and maintaining chainsaws, so it is ideal preparation before an on-site VOC. Finishes with a 60-question knowledge check that must be passed at 100%. Written by 3rd Eye Australia — this is awareness training only. It is not accredited, it is not a VOC or a competency assessment, and it does not authorise you to operate a chainsaw at work; a workplace VOC and, where required, accredited training with a Registered Training Organisation are still needed.
