The new Lion product is supplied with a calibration report. In accordance with the Australian Standard AS3547 , to which the SD400 should be returned for recalibration every six months (in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures of Australian police services).  There is no time or test count lockout on the SD400  unit that will stop operating after a certain period of time has elapsed or after a certain number of tests have been performed.

The LION SD400 Alcolmeter is the most-popular hand-held breath-alcohol screening instrument in Australia (with around ten thousand in use here) and, indeed, in the world.  It is available with or without an optional portable printer kit and may be used in either passive (qualitative) mode (with a re-useable sampling cone) or in active (quantitative) mode (with a single-use mouthpiece tube).  The SD400’s internal data logger stores the test results (date, time, reading, gender, reason for test, test location, etc) for the last 5000 tests, which data may be downloaded to a database or spread sheet program for historical recording or statistical analysis.  The SD400 has a manufacturer-rated duty cycle of 5000 tests per month and will perform around 4000 tests on one set of easily-replaced AA-sized alkaline batteries – available virtually anywhere.

Another unique feature of the Lion SD400 Alcolmeter is the design of the mouthpiece tube, which has an integral sidearm to prevent the possibility of pathogen transfer via saliva from one employee to another.

The popular “AlcoBlow” passive alcohol screener, which has three indicator lights to show the result of a breath test – a green light indicates an alcohol level of less than 0.01%BAC, an amber light indicates an alcohol concentration between 0.01 and 0.02%BAC and a red light indicates an alcohol concentration of above 0.02%BAC. The AlcoBlow is an ideal high-speed precursory screening instrument, since it uses no sampling consumables (that is, no mouthpiece tube or sample cup) and is unobtrusive in operation.
